Variety reports that Tom Cruise and Spyglass Entertainment are circling each other on The Tourist, the Bharat Nalluri-directed remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer.
The film has emerged as the strongest contender for Cruise’s next film, and his first star vehicle since the Bryan Singer-directed Valkyrie at United Artists.
Written by Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes, the thriller concerns an American tourist who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.
Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman will produce with Canal Plus.
Cruise has been careful in weighing his next film, and the trade adds that his participation in The Tourist hasn’t solidified.
