Disney Developing Live-Action The Sword in the Stone Remake

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Disney is developing a live-action remake of The Sword in the Stone, based on the 1963 animated film. “Game of Thrones” writer/producer Brian Cogman is set to pen the script which will be produced by Brigham Taylor (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Based on the T.H. White story from 1938, the animated feature tells the story of a young King Arthur, nicknamed “Wart” in the film, and his training at the hand of the wizard Merlin leading him to pull the enchanted sword from the stone and claim the throne of England. 

The film joins a growing roster of live-action versions of animated Disney films heading to the big screen. Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book hits theaters April 15, 2016 with Beauty and the Beast following on March 17, 2017. After that, plans call for a Tim Burton-directed Dumbo and new live-action versions of Winnie the Pooh, Mulan,Pinnochio, the “Aladdin” prequel Genies and more. There’s also a sequel to Alice in Wonderland on the way with Alice Through the Looking Glass (arriving May 27, 2016), reports of one for Maleficent in development as well, a live-action Peter Pan spinoff, Tink, set to star Reese Witherspoon as the iconic fairy, plus a live-action Prince Charming movie.
