Although Seth Rogen recently hinted on Twitter that the title role had been cast on his and Evan Goldberg’s upcoming AMC series adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s acclaimed comic book series “Preacher,” the talent in question remains a mystery. The Hollywood Reporter does have an update on the series, however, bringing word that “Robin Hood,” “True Blood” and “Constantine” star Lucy Griffiths has signed on to play a character named Emily Woodrow, who seems to be an original character created specifically for the series.
“Preacher,” published between 1995 and 2000, tells the story of Custer, a small town Texas preacher who, nearly at his faith’s end, finds himself merged with a supernatural entity, Genesis, birthed from both an angel and a demon. Imbued with the word of God (the ability to make anyone obey his commands), Jesse hits the road, reunited with his ex girlfriend, Tulip, and joined by a rowdy Irish vampire, Cassidy, to track down God himself and force him to explain why he abandoned his duties in Heaven.
According to the outlet, Griffith’s Woodrow is “a no-nonsense single mother of three. Emily’s a waitress, the church organist, bookkeeper and Jesse’s loyal right hand. Stoic and strong, wise beyond her years, she can’t help but have a little thing for Preacher Jesse.”
Griffiths joins Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, Ruth Negga as Tulip and Ian Colletti as Arseface. Check back for additional casting updates as they become available.
A Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production, “Preacher” will be produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritz’s Original Film. The pilot was written by Sam Catlin and has Rogen and Goldberg attached to direct. “Preacher” is set to shoot this year with an eye toward premiering in 2016.
