More Critical Love for Richard Linklater’s Boyhood

The Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) took an unconventional approach by selecting Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer as their top film with actress Tilda Swinton receiving a Supporting Actress nod for her role in it.

The Belgian drama Two Days, One Night from the Dardenne Brothers fared well among critics with three of the four critic groups selecting that as their top Foreign Language film as well as Marion Cotillard as Best Actress in it, with L.A. going with Pawel Pawlikowski’s polish drama Ida instead.

Boyhood also received attention for the performance by Patricia Arquette, who received Best Actress from the L.A. film critics and Supporting Actress from the New York Film Critics Online.

Best Actor ran the gamut from Tom Hardy in Locke (LAFCA) and Brendan Gleeson in Calvary (BOFCA) to Oscar favorites Michael Keaton for Birdman (BSOFC) and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything (NYFCO).

In general, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu’s Birdman received quite a bit of attention for its cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, but it also received other awards including screenplay from Boston and New York Online, ensemble cast from the latter and a Supporting Actress award for Emma Stone from the former. The Boston Online critics gave Inarritu their directing award as well as giving Edward Norton a supporting actor award.

All three groups except the latter felt that J.K. Simmons’ performance in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash was worthy of their Supporting Actor award.

Animated feature was split between Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie. Similarly, most groups are picking either the Roger Ebert film Life Itself or the Edward Snowden doc CITIZENFOUR as their documentary feature.
