Del Toro Still Interested in Potter?

Last week, ComingSoon.net visited the set of Guillermo del Toro’s action sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and one of the questions asked of him was whether he might still be interested in directing a “Harry Potter” movie. It has been rumored for many years that Del Toro was one of the directors in line for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban before they went with his long-time pal Alfonso Cuaron, but since Del Toro has said in the past that he wouldn’t be interested in directing J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, maybe he’d like to try his hand at the final chapter of the J.K. Rowling franchise? (Warning: possible minor spoilers for the 7th and final book, which this writer still hasn’t read)

“They came to me once, for the third one,” Del Toro told us, confirming earlier rumors. “When I read the books before the movies were done, I always pictured Charles Dickens. They were very Dickensian. The situation of Harry Potter reminded me a lot of Pip from ‘Great Expectations.’ I saw them as deeper, more creaky, more corroded, but they were textured very differently when the first two movies came out. They were so bright and happy and full of light, that I wasn’t interested.”

“They seem to be getting eerie and darker, and I’m up to be the one who kills twenty guys,” he said with a laugh, possibly referring to the plot of the last book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which has yet to have a director attached to helm. “If they come back to me, I’ll think about it.”
