Dimension Films has announced that Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno, “Arrested Development”) has signed on to star in the cutting edge comedy Youth in Revolt. The screenplay, written by Gustin Nash, is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by C.D Payne (“Civic Beauties,” “Revolting Youth: The Further Journals of Nick Twisp,” “Frisco Pigeon Mambo,” and “Cut to the Twisp”). Payne’s self-published “Youth in Revolt” became an underground sensation and garnered a youthful cult following throughout the world. The novel has been published in multiple countries, staged as a play, broadcast over the radio and has been the subject of countless fan-based Web sites.
Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films stated, “Like the book, ‘Youth in Revolt’ will be a cutting edge film with lots of laughter. Michael Cera is fantastic and I think there is no one more perfect for the role of Nick Twisp.”
Michael Cera stated, “I’m very excited to do the movie, it’s my favorite book of all time. And now I won’t have to pay to get my hair cut.”
Youth in Revolt is the irreverent story about the wild adventures of a teenage boy named Nick Twisp who meets the girl of his dreams while on a family vacation and has to turn his life and the lives of all those around him upside down in order to be with her.
Best known for his role as George Michael Bluth on the Award wining Fox series, “Arrested Development,” Cera will star in the Judd Apatow produced feature, Superbad for Sony opening August 17th. He will next appear in Jason Reitman’s Juno for Fox Searchlight premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. He was recently cast alongside Jack Black in The Year One also for producer Judd Apatow and director Harold Ramis. Cera recently launched a web based series entitled “Clark & Michael” which he co-created, co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed and co-starred in that lives on the internet at ClarkandMichael.com.
David Permut will serve as producer on the film. Permut Presentations vice president of production Steve Longi will co-produce along with Miranda Freiberg. This will be a co-production between Permut Presentations and Shangri-La Entertainment. A director and additional cast are yet to be announced.
