Warner Bros.’ 300 dominated the box office during its second weekend, adding an estimated $31.2 million. Despite dropping 56% in ticket sales, Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s epic graphic novel has reached $127.5 million after 10 days. 300 was made for about $65 million, not counting promotions. The studio expects the movie to reach $200 million domestically.
Touchstone’s Wild Hogs remained in second place with another $18.8 million. The comedy has earned an impressive $103.99 million in three weeks.
Sony Pictures’ Premonition, starring Sandra Bullock, opened in third with $18 million. The psychological thriller, budgeted at $20 million, debuted in 2,831 theaters and averaged $6,358 per location. It marks Bullock’s biggest opening of her career. Her previous best opener was Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which made $16.167 million in June, 2002.
“Saw” franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s Dead Silence took the fourth spot and $7.8 million from 1,805 theaters for a $4,305 average. The supernatural thriller was made for $20 million.
Chris Rock’s I Think I Love My Wife rounded out the top five with just $5.7 million from 1,776 locations. The film’s distributor, Fox Searchlight, was hoping the movie would open at about $12 million.
Disney’s Bridge to Terabithia earned $5.1 million its fifth weekend for a total of $74.9 million and sixth place. It was followed by Sony’s Ghost Rider, which added $4 million in its fifth weekend for a total of $110.2 million.
In limited release, IFC’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley opened with $75,300 from 9 theaters, while The Weinstein Company’s Nomad: The Warrior made just $12,000 from 30 theaters.
