Messengers Maul Mothers at Box Office

Sony’s Screen Gems and Ghost House Pictures’ The Messengers won the box office on Super Bowl weekend, earning an estimated $14.5 million from 2,528 theaters. The Sam Raimi-produced Pang brothers ghost film, made for $16 million, averaged $5,735 per theaters.

Starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, the Universal romantic comedy Because I Said So was close behind in second with $13 million from 2,526 theaters for an average of $5,155.

Last week’s champ, 20th Century Fox’s comedy Epic Movie dropped 55.8% and to third place. The spoof added $8.3 million and has pulled in $29.4 million in two weeks.

Still going strong after seven weeks in theaters, Fox’s Night at the Museum earned another $6.8 million and has collected a massive $225.4 million. The film has moved up to 54th on the all-time domestic blockbuster list.

Joe Carnahan’s crime-drama Smokin’ Aces rounded out the top five with $6.3 million in its second weekend. The $17 million Universal release has made $24.9 million so far.
