Did rapper Nelly get arrested in St. Louis?
Yes, rapper Nelly was arrested on August 7, 2024, at the Hollywood Casino in the St. Louis area, Missouri.
Billboard reports that Nelly was seen in handcuffs at the casino after authorities found a long-standing warrant related to an old insurance issue. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Maryland Heights Police Department but has since been released.
What is rapper Nelly accused of?
According to AP News, he was arrested for drug possession and an insurance violation. Nelly has been accused of illegal drug possession.
Missouri State Highway Patrol flagged an outstanding warrant for Nelly, stemming from a previous traffic stop due to lack of insurance. This led to a background check and a search, during which officers reportedly found him in possession of four ecstasy pills.
Following his arrest, Nelly’s mugshot quickly went viral. Although he has yet to face the charges, it will ultimately be up to the prosecutor’s discretion. Nelly’s attorneys have denied the drug possession charges. In a statement to Billboard, attorney Scott Rosenblum claimed that an overzealous officer targeted Nelly. He stated, “Mr. Haynes was not charged with drug possession. He was arrested for ‘No Proof of Insurance’ from 2018 on a warrant issued December 2023 that he received no notice. Mr. Haynes was targeted by an overzealous, out of line officer.”
Rosenblum explained that after winning several jackpots at the casino, the officer unnecessarily ran a background check. He said, “Instead of just supervising the transfer of Mr. Haynes’ winnings, this officer felt compelled to needlessly run a check for warrants. The officer informed Mr. Haynes a background check was mandated when a player won over a certain amount; Mr. Haynes knew this to be untrue as he had won several jackpots for similar or greater amounts.”
Rosenblum also claimed that the search of Nelly was conducted without probable cause, leading to the alleged discovery of ecstasy. The lawyer claimed, “It is also important to note that Mr. Haynes, as part of the requirements to travel internationally, is regularly asked to supply proof of no warrants, including FBI checks. There were none. I am 100 percent confident this case will go nowhere. And we will be asking for an inquiry into this officer’s conduct.”
