After the release of House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5, viewers want to know whether Sunfyre’s death was confirmed in it. Sunfyre or Sunfyre the Golden is Aegon II’s dragon. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful of all Targaryen dragons, Sunfyre accompanied Aegon II to the Battle of Rook’s Rest in episode 4 and quickly proved to be no match for the Red Queen Meleys. Eventually, Sunfyre is horribly burned by Vhagar’s fire and falls to the ground with his rider. By the end of episode 4, Sunfyre is alive, though barely. However, episode 5 seems to offer contrasting information about Sunfyre’s fate. So, did Sunfyre die or survive? Here is everything we know about it.
Did Sunfyre survive the Battle of Rook’s Rest in House of the Dragon Season 2?
Yes, Sunfyre most likely survived the battle. Early in episode 5, Criston Cole mentions that they left Sunfyre, who was “long in the dying” but not dead, at Rook’s Rest. However, toward the end of the episode, Rhaenyra seems to imply in a conversation with Jacaerys that Sunfyre has died. This understandably has confused some viewers about what really happened to the dragon.
In Fire & Blood, Sunfyre didn’t die at Rook’s Rest and went on to play a critical role in the Targaryen civil war. The men Criston left behind fed him the corpses of their enemies. When they ran out of those, they got him calves and sheep. Eventually, Sunfyre’s wing healed, though at an awkward angle, and he was able to fly again. The dragon eventually reunited with Aegon II. In 130 AC, Aegon captured Rhaenyra after the latter was betrayed by Ser Alfred Broome and fed her to Sunfyre.
For Sunfyre to be alive in the series, either the information that Rhaenyra received about the dragon is incorrect or she meant Meleys when she spoke about the dead dragon to Jace. If Sunfyre is indeed dead, it will be a significant diversion from how things are in the book and leaves a big question mark on what will ultimately happen to Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon.
