Nagraj Manjule is directing the film along with co-writer Abhay Koranne and Manjule himself. Additionally, Multiple producers, including Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashish Aryan, and Ashwini Sidwani, are producing the Matka King under the banner of Roy Kapur Films.
Set in 1960s Mumbai, the film centers around a cotton dealer who changes the city’s landscape with a gambling game called Matka. Alongside Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover, and Siddharth Jadhav are starring in pivotal roles.

The streaming OTT giant Prime Video recently announced on Instagram that makers have started filming Matka King and that it will soon be available for streaming on Prime Video. The announcement on Instagram reads, “Ready to place our bet. MatkaKingOnPrime soon but filming now.” However, Prime Video did not specify a release date, adding to the anticipation.
The shared poster features Vijay Varma, who plays the lead role, dressed in a white shirt and emerging from a joker card. Moreover, he throws cards toward the camera, indicating that the upcoming series has a gambling theme.
Matka King is reportedly inspired by the life of Ratan Khatri, the originator of Matka betting in Mumbai during the 1960s. This gambling game revolved around the opening and closing cotton prices transmitted from the New York cotton exchange in the 1960s. However, this became immensely popular across India, with daily turnovers reaching up to crores in those days. Notably, makers have to make an official announcement regarding this.
