After the success of Barbie, Margot Robbie is producing The Sims movie based on the popular video game series. The film has reportedly found a studio to back it up along with its writing-directing team.
Why Margot Robbie’s The Sims movie is moving ahead with Amazon MGM
Video games are the new go-to content gold mine for Hollywood as they continue to take the industry by storm. From TV shows including The Last of Us, Halo, and others, to films such as Uncharted and the upcoming Borderlands movie, Hollywood is swarmed with live-action video game content. Now after the success of its latest Fallout series, Amazon MGM is developing The Sims movie.
Previously, it was reported that Robbie will produce The Sims movie, with Loki Season 1 director Kate Herron helming it. However, it did not have a studio attached to it. Now, according to Puck (via GameSpot), a major bidding war of studios led Amazon MGM to acquire the project.
Robbie will produce the film under the LuckyChap Entertainment banner alongside Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara. In the past, the company also developed several projects, including 2020’s Birds of Prey, 2024’s My Old Ass, 2023’s Saltburn, 2017’s I, Tonya, and 2023’s Barbie, among others.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee will also produce The Sims movie while the company behind its game series, Electronic Arts, will add creative input to it. The cast of the video game-based Sims movie has not been announced yet. It is also not confirmed whether Robbie will also be starring in the film.
However, director Kate Herron, who is attached to a few of The Last of Us Season 2 episodes, and also directed some episodes of Daybreak and Sex Education, will team up with writer Briony Redman. There is no confirmed release date for The Sims movie yet.
