Thunder Road’s (John Wick) Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee joined forces with former Screen Gems executive Scott Strauss to create a new genre label, Badlands.

Badlands Debuts With Spider Thriller Arachnid

With the assistance of Andrew Schwartzberg and Jon Shiffman’s Renegade Capital, the independent genre label will feature development and co-financed funds. The aim is to make two to three movies a year, starting with the spider thriller Arachnid.

Arachnid comes from director Ángel Gómez (Don’t Listen) and writer Jayson Rothwell (Polar, Silent Night) and is set to film in Madrid this July. In the meantime, it’ll be shopped around at Cannes next week.

Thunder Road is renowned for projects such as John Wick Chapter 4 and the recent Monkey Man starring Dev Patel. Scott Strauss oversaw big hitters such as the Resident Evil and Underworld series at Sony’s Screen Gems label and had a hand in an eclectic mix of films from The Pope’s Exorcist to Easy A.

Matilda Lutz is best known for being the protagonist of Coralie Fargeat‘s 2017 rape-revenge bloodbath Revenge, but has also appeared in other genre fare such as Rings, A Classic Horror Story, and Final Cut. She’s also playing the titular role in a new version of Red Sonja.
