With Sony delaying Kraven the Hunter once again, Spider-Man Universe fans are wondering if the film will be canceled entirely. Will it get the Batgirl treatment? Here’s everything you need to know.
Is Sony canceling Kraven the Hunter?
Sony has not canceled Kraven the Hunter as the movie is slated to be released on December 13, 2024. The film was initially scheduled for January 13, 2023, but went through a series of delays throughout its development phase.
Needing more time to complete the film, Sony initially pushed Kraven to October 6, 2023. It was then followed by another delay. This pushed the movie’s release date to August 30, 2024. But now, Kraven the Hunter is moving to 2024’s Holiday period, which could be its final delay.
People hoping to see the film shouldn’t be worried as Kraven the Hunter will likely not be getting the Batgirl treatment, despite the SSU not performing well. Warner Bros. Discovery canceled Batgirl in its post-production stage to claim a tax write-off, as the studio did not find it worthy of a theatrical release.
However, Kraven was always produced with a plan to be launched theatrically. So, it will eventually make its way to the big screen.
Why was Kraven the Hunter delayed?
Sony didn’t provide any reason for the latest delay to the film’s release. But the studio likely wanted to give the upcoming Karate Kid movie more time to develop while still using the film’s original release slot. Hence, The Karate Kid, which only began production in early 2024, was moved to May 30, 2025, while Kraven took its spot.
Another potential reason could be Sony wanting to release Venom: The Last Dance before Kraven the Hunter. Besides Venom, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has produced two flops. So, after the box office disappointment of Madame Web, the studio might want to restore fans’ faith in the SSU with its most successful Spider-Man adjacent brand.
Venom: The Last Dance’s potential success could hype the fans for Kraven the Hunter while also enabling Sony to schedule some reshoots for Kraven the Hunter if needed.
