Yellowstone star Luke Grimes recently addressed Kevin Costner’s controversial exit from their hit television series. In an interview with The Independent, Grimes called the entire situation “unfortunate” but understood why Costner had to leave.
“Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold,” Grimes said. “I know, [Costner] got busy with his movies that were like passion projects. At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man; you gotta do what you love.”
The passion project Grimes refers to is Horizon: An American Saga, Costner’s epic Westerns that he directed and co-wrote. Costner left Yellowstone Season 5 to finish working on Horizon Chapters 1 and 2, which arrive in theaters on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024, respectively.
In Yellowstone, Grimes plays Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of Costner’s John Dutton III.
What to Expect in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2?
Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 aired from November 2022 to January 2023. Part 2 is expected to begin filming in May 2024, with a planned release date of November 2024.
The Yellowstone stars expected to return for Part 2 include Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long Dutton, and Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton.
Despite his departure, Costner recently said he would love to return to wrap up his character’s arc. However, it’s unknown if the Oscar winner will get that chance.
“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner told Entertainment Tonight. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone airs on the Paramount Network.
