Project Hail Mary Release Date Set for Lord & Miller Space Movie With Ryan Gosling

Amazon MGM Studios has announced a release date for Project Hail Mary.

Per Deadline, Project Hail Mary will be released in United States theaters on March 20, 2026.

Project Hail Mary is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who previously directed 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 2012’s 21 Jump Street, 2014’s The Lego Movie, and 2022’s 22 Jump Street. Lord and Miller are also heavily involved with Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise.

The film stars Ryan Gosling. Gosling produces the movie alongside Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Andy Weir.

What is Project Hail Mary about?

Based on Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name, the film, according to Deadline, is set in the near future and sees Gosling play a character named Ryland Grace, “a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or his mission. His memory returns in bursts and he pieces together that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to reverse the impact of a space event that had already hurled our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age. As details of the mission unravel, he must call on all of his scientific training and sheer ingenuity, but he might not have to do it alone…”

The script for Project Hail Mary was written by Drew Goddard, who previously wrote 2008’s Cloverfield, 2013’s World War Z, and 2015’s The Martian (which was also based on a novel by Weird).

Goddard — who executive produces Project Hail Mary with Sarah Esberg and Ken Kao — also wrote and directed 2012’s The Cabin in the Woods and 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale. He’s now attached to helm the next entry in the Matrix franchise.

Project Hail Mary hits United States theaters on March 20, 2026.
