Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss still wants to make a Sherlock movie with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Speaking with Deadline at the 2024 Olivier Awards, Gatiss was asked if there would ever be a formal return to the Sherlock series that sees Cumberbatch play the titular detective.
“Don’t know, you’d have to ask Benedict and Martin,” Gatiss answered. “Are they here?”
Gatiss added, “We’d like to make a film. It’s just very — trying to get everyone together is very difficult, so we’ll see.”
Mark Gatiss has talked about a potential Sherlock movie before
Gatiss had commented on a potential Sherlock movie before. He told The Guardian in 2023, “People think you can just wave a wand. It’s incredibly difficult to get people interested and get films made. I remember talking to Edgar Wright about Ant-Man, into which he put eight years of his life and then didn’t make. Eight years is not short of a decade. Add a few of those up, you’re dead and you’ve made four films. But, also, we were genuinely interested in making them for TV because we love TV. We would love to make a Sherlock movie. It’s the natural thing to do.”
At this time, no formal plans to make a Sherlock movie have been officially announced.
Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories, Sherlock was co-created by Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the series, and Steven Moffat. The series ran for four seasons, with the premiere originally airing in 2010.
Along with Cumberbatch and Gatiss, Sherlock stars Freeman as Dr. John Watson, Rupert Graves as D.I. Greg Lestrade, Una Stubbs as Mrs. Hudson, Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper, Andrew Scott as Jim Moriarty, and Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan Watson.
All four seasons of Sherlock are currently streaming on Hulu and BritBox.
