What is Interstellar about?
“In Earth’s future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth’s population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind’s new home.”
Along with McConaughey and Caine, Interstellar stars Jessica Chastain as Murphy “Murph” Cooper, John Lithgow as Donald, Casey Affleck as Tom Cooper, Wes Bentley as Doyle, Topher Grace as Getty, Ellen Burstyn as elderly Murph, Timothée Chalamet as 15-year-old Tom, Mackenzie Foy as 10-year-old Murph, and Matt Damon as Dr. Mann.
Nolan co-wrote the screenplay for Interstellar with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. The movie was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer), Best Production Design (Nathan Crowley and Gary Fettis), Best Sound Editing (Richard King), and Best Sound Mixing (Gary Rizzo, Gregg Landaker, and Mark Weingarten), while it ultimately won the award for Best Visual Effects (Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter, and Scott Fisher).
Interstellar was originally released in United States theaters in November 2014. It made approximately $731 million at the global box office off an estimated budget of $165 million. Following Interstellar, Nolan went on to make 2017’s Dunkirk, 2020’s Tenet, and, most recently, 2023’s Oppenheimer.
Interstellar returns to theaters on September 27, 2024.
