Mini-Review:
I was not expecting much from “Stick It.” Looking at the cover and the trailers, I was expecting yet another movie tailor made for teen girls. What I ended up finding was still a movie made for teens, but there was something more here. “Stick It” is actually quite funny. The dialogue is absolutely hilarious and the one liners are quite memorable. From ditzy gymnasts to skater dudes, everyone in the movie gets to deliver a laugh at one point or another.
The cast of “Stick It” is also surprisingly strong. Jeff Bridges lends a lot of legitimacy to the movie by playing Burt Vickerman, a world famous gymnast coach. He’s funny, charming, and tough. His presence alone tells you know there’s something special about “Stick It.” However, the real surprise is Missy Peregrym as the rebellious Haley Graham. She’s pretty, funny, and apparently quite athletic. I don’t know where she came from, but she’s definitely a talent to watch in the future. Joining her is a strong supporting cast. Most notable among them is Vanessa Lengies as Joanne Charis, Haley’s ditzy nemesis. Her stupid comments generate a lot of laughs.
Pop music fans will really get a kick out of the soundtrack, too. There’s quite an array of modern music that perfectly matches the tone of the film.
I would certainly recommend “Stick It” to teenage girls, but I think it will please a wider audience, male and female, young and old. There’s a little something here for everyone.
This DVD is jam packed with bonus features. You’ll find your standard features like bloopers, deleted scenes, and outtakes. You’ll also find a pretty good commentary including the director and actors as well as the director and filmmakers. Focusing on the gymnastic side of things, there’s a short video highlighting all the professional gymnasts seen in the film as well as a video showing the gymnasts in slow motion. Also included are music videos by Missy Elliot and Jeannie Ortega.
