What is Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill about?
“The never-before-told story of folk-rock icon Judee Sill, who in just two years went from living in a car to appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone,” the synopsis for the film reads. “The documentary charts her troubled adolescence through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death. Featuring Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Fleet Foxes, David Geffen, JD Souther, Big Thief, Weyes Blood, Tim Page and more. Executive Producers include Maya Hawke and Cheryl Strayed.”
Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill is co-directed by Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom. Lindstrom produces the movie alongside Peter Kenney, while Daniel Braun, Josh Braun, Kenney, Hawke, and Strayed all serve as executive producers.
Brown and Lindstrom said in a statement, “We wanted, as much as possible, to make a first-person film narrated, animated and scored by Judee herself. Her death in 1979 robbed us of the possibility of interviewing her, but we spent years digging and searching for everything we could find that was related to Judee. We found her journals, letters, drawings, sheet music, and audio interviews, which form the basis of the film. Additionally, the soundtrack was created from the multi-tracks of her recorded work.”
Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill releases in select United States and Canadian theaters, along with on digital platforms, on April 12, 2024.
