The remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong now has a playable demo on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo plans to release the full version on February 16th, fans can play through the game’s first four levels right now.
Fans can help Mario recover the stolen toys
Originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, Mario vs. Donkey Kong sees the titular gorilla making off with several Mini-Mario toys. Mario pursues him through the toy factory, solving puzzles and platforming challenges to retrieve the Mini-Marios. To accomplish this, Mario gains several new athletic abilities, including handstands, triple jumps, and sideways somersaults.
Nintendo describes the new Mario vs. Donkey Kong as “an updated reimagining” of the 2004 original. It features updated graphics, all-new worlds, and an entirely re-recorded score. The remake also introduces a two-player mode featuring Mario and Toad. Meanwhile, the game’s single-player mode also introduces new difficulty settings that weren’t present in the original game. Classic Style re-creates the difficulty of the 2004 original, while Casual Style removes time limits and lets players restart from checkpoints. Players can try both the single and co-op modes and the difficulty settings in the new demo.
Nintendo also released a new trailer showcasing the upcoming game and the challenges players should expect in Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Players can use color switches to add or remove obstacles or even turn enemies into platforms. Meanwhile, ropes, elevators, and conveyor belts provide different ways to get around each stage. The two-player mode also features alternate level layouts, requiring both players to work together to solve puzzles.
