WWE Superstar John Cena hinted at his post-in-ring role during a recent interview, shedding light on his plans for the future. As a 16-time world champion before transitioning to a successful Hollywood career. Returning briefly in 2023 amid a SAG-AFTRA strike, he spoke about his wrestling future.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cena shared his self-imposed timeline for winding down his illustrious WWE career. John Cena, who turns 47 on April 23, emphasized the importance of maintaining the same passion as the global and dedicated WWE fanbase. He stated, “I made a promise to the consumer early on, to WWE fans, ’cause I know how tough it is to be a fan. You gotta come out of pocket — and WWE has a ton of content — it takes a lot to be a passionate fan and our fanbase is passionate and global,” he said.
He continued: “I never wanted to go out there just for the sake of going out there. And I’m gonna be 47 this year. I feel great. So inside I feel great, but I know what it takes to be a WWE performer night in and night out and I don’t ever wanna just go out there and do it to do it. I wanna have the passion — the same passion as the fanbase — and I wanna give them exactly what they give me. The miles on the speedometer say, ‘Hey, that’s gotta be done before 50,” he said.
Cena’s comments coincided with the promotion of his upcoming film, “Argylle,” set to hit theaters in the US on Friday, February 2. He acknowledged the physical demands of being a WWE performer, expressing his desire to retire before turning 50.
John Cena discloses ideal location for his retirement match
After his last match at WWE Crown Jewel 2023, John Cena suffered a dominant loss to Solo Sikoa, who executed 11 Samoan Spikes. This defeat was Cena’s most significant since SummerSlam 2014, facing Brock Lesnar and enduring 16 German suplexes. Cena bid a near-tearful goodbye to fans after the Crown Jewel match.
Contrary to retirement hints after his loss to Solo Sikoa, John Cena appears ready to step back into the WWE ring. During a recent episode of BBC’s The One Show, Cena opened up about his thoughts on an ideal location for a retirement match. He stated, “Fans in the UK, WWE fans, they’re the best & fans in London specifically they will let you know how they feel & I don’t think I’ll be able to choose my opponent but if I could choose a venue it’d be the O2 in London.”
While Cena didn’t confirm a specific return date, his sentiments about the O2 Arena in London as the ideal venue for a retirement match have sparked excitement among fans. The last time he appeared in the O2 Arena was last year at Money in the Bank, where he was confronted by Grayson Waller.
