While it previously looked like Mindhunter Season 3 wasn’t going to happen, actor Holt McCallany says that David Fincher has at least considered the idea of bringing the series back.
Speaking with Awards Daily, McCallany was asked if there was any chance that Mindhunter could return for a third season. While nothing is confirmed at this time and McCallany admitted that it’s still probably “unlikely,” The Iron Claw actor said he believes David Fincher has “thought about” bringing the Netflix series back, thus giving fans their first glimpse of hope that a third season come someday happen.
“I’ve heard that David’s thought about it,” he said. “I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do. It’s been a few years now, so it’s probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign.”
What is Netflix’s Mindhunter?
Based on the 1995 true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, Mindhunter debuted on Netflix in 2017. The series stars Jonathan Groff and McCallany as two FBI agents who attempt to understand serial killers’ minds, thus leading them to interview and profile a number of notorious killers while creating the Behavioral Science Unit.
The second season of Mindhunter followed in 2019. Netflix opted not to go forward with a third season when Fincher began pursuing other projects; however, a representative of the company told TVLine in January 2020 that Fincher “may revisit Mindhunter again in the future.”
Fincher told Forbes in February 2023, “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment (for Season 3). I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”
Mindhunter Season 3 has not been confirmed by Netflix at this time. Fincher has also not addressed the recent comments made by McCallanay.
