“It’s striking that two films from the hyperpolarized Colombian political landscape, (Petro and Igualada) will premiere within days of each other in Park City,” director Sean Mattison said. “The films offer complementary stories and inspire hope for an American audience gearing up for their own high stakes and divisive election season. As our politics degrade further into dysfunction and we confront authoritarianism these films highlight how Colombia stared into its own abyss and rejected politics of hatred and division.
“After decades of struggle, millions of marginalized Colombians that had been silenced by corruption, paramilitary violence, and extrajudicial killings found their champions in Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez and triumphed at the ballot box. The two films bear witness to a historic and unprecedented moment of change.”
