Directed by Shawn Levy and based on the short story ‘Steel’ by Richard Matheson, Real Steel is a science fiction film. Set in 2020 in a futuristic world where human boxers have been replaced with robots, the plot revolves around former boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackson) as he teams up with his estranged son to rebuild a sparring robot and enter various competitions with it. Real Steel premiered in 2011 and earned $299.3 million at the global box office against its $110 million budget. If you are wondering whether there will be Real Steel 2, this is what we have discovered.
Here’s all we know about Real Steel 2 and whether or not it’s coming out.
Is there a Real Steel 2 release date?
Real Steel 2 does not have an official release date, but the possibility of its eventual development and release can’t be entirely ruled out.
As of December 2023, a sequel to Real Steel hasn’t been officially announced, despite the commercial success of the first film and the availability of the narrative scope. Real Steel ends (spoilers warning for those who haven’t seen the film) with Atom, the robot Charlie rebuilds, winning the public opinion despite losing the climactic fight to the undefeated global champion robot Zeus by decision. Even though the plot of the first film can be regarded as self-contained. it can be potentially used as a launchpad for future films.
Levy and Dreamworks, the production company behind the first film, were very interested in developing a sequel after Real Steel turned out to be a big hit. However, in the following years, news about the sequel has come out sporadically at best. In 2014, Levy revealed that Real Steel 2 was in development. “We have been quietly developing a sequel to Real Steel for three and a half years,” the filmmaker said. “We’ve come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we’ve found both but never at the same time. It’s ongoing. I know the clock is ticking.”
However, Levy expressed his reservations about making the sequel in a December 2022 interview with Collider. “I really try to not make sequels that don’t deserve to be,” he said. “And it’s why I didn’t move forward with the Real Steel sequel because I didn’t feel we had a second movie that could match or top the first.”
In January 2022, a TV series set in the same universe as Real Steel went into development at Disney Plus, making the chances for a Real Steel sequel rather dim, but not completely non-existent, as the original film was a success and the fans are still very much interested in it. ComingSoon will provide an update if Real Steel 2 is ever officially confirmed.
