The 28-year-old stand-up comedian, Matt Rife, has found himself amidst controversy after his latest Netflix special, “Natural Selection.” But what is the story behind it, and why is Rife’s latest comedy special being bombarded with so much hate? Here’s all you need to know.
What is the Matt Rife joke controversy?
In his opening segment, Matt Rife joked about domestic violence, which has not been received well by the audience.
Starting the show, Rife described a trip to a restaurant with his friend where a woman with a black eye served him. He and his friend argued about why the woman, who was clearly the recipient of domestic violence, was made to serve and not given some other duty in the kitchen. Then Rife joked saying, “Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.”
Implying that a woman got beaten because she couldn’t cook hasn’t gone down well. It has been seen as a sign of him pandering to toxic masculinity.
Why is the Matt Rife Netflix Comedy Special getting hate?
Matt Rife’s joke about domestic violence hasn’t gone well, especially with the female demographic whom he amassed via TikTok, and now his entire special has met with major backlash.
As per fans and Rife himself, he mostly attracted the female demographic on TikTok, which got him popular.
Rife apologized to fans on his Instagram story, which met with even more backlash as the comedian got accused of ableism after that.
It remains to be seen what happens next. Netflix hasn’t yet responded to any criticisms about Matt Rife’s jokes and the comedy special remains available to watch.
