Frozen 4 is in development from Disney.
While Frozen 3 has yet to be released, Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared on Good Morning America on Thursday, November 16, 2023, to announce that a fourth Frozen movie was also in the works.
Iger said, per Variety, “Frozen 3 is in the works, and there might be a Frozen 4 in the works too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now. [Director] Jenn Lee, who created the original Frozen and Frozen 2, is hard at work with her team at Disney animation on not one but actually two stories.”
While further details about Frozen 4 remain under wraps, Iger also spoke about Disney’s Frozen theme park in Hong Kong.
“For years at our Disney Parks, we’ve been creating these large immersive worlds,” he said. “Essentially, they are the physical embodiment of some of the greatest stories that we’ve told…And of course, Frozen being one of our most valuable franchises, I think it’s just right for building the place that Frozen takes place in It’s just a fantastic land that enables people to get immersed in the story of ‘Frozen’ and interact with all the great characters from the films.”
Breaking down Disney’s Frozen franchise and what comes next
Frozen was released in 2013 and quickly became a box office juggernaut, bringing in $1.285 billion at the worldwide box office off a budget of $150 million. A sequel, Frozen II, followed in 2019, along with a number of animated shorts and specials.
Iger officially announced in February 2023 that another Frozen sequel was coming, along with additional Toy Story and Zootopia installments. Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, confirmed in a tweet that he’ll be returning for Frozen 3, while Idina Menzel‘s Elsa, is also returning.
Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, previously announced “with zero authority” that Frozen 3 is happening on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show prior to Iger’s 2023 announcement; however, Bell has yet to confirm whether or not she’s returning for the third film.
In June 2023, Lee told The Wrap she doesn’t plan on directing Frozen 3; however, she also recently told ComicBook that she would “definitely” go back to helming the franchise. “I do get to be a part of every film,” she said. “I do get to be a part of Frozen. It all feels great. But yeah, it’s there. I think I’ll know the right moment.”
