The series was initially in development at Disney Plus, with filming taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in September 2022. At the time, the series was slated to have six episodes. However, by August 2023, Disney Plus had decided not to go forward with the show, presumably as a cost-cutting measure. Eventually, the series landed on The Roku Channel and was expanded to eight episodes. The Spiderwick Chronicles is set to premiere in early 2024.

This is because, as mentioned above, the film was originally supposed to release on Disney Plus, but the streaming service ultimately passed on it likely due to cost-cutting reasons. In October 2023, it was reported that The Roku Channel had acquired the US rights to the upcoming film.
