Netflix’s Robbie Williams: British Singer Opens Up About His Struggles With ‘Bigorexia’

Netflix is preparing to release a four-part documentary titled Robbie Williams. Joe Pearlman is directing the series, which will highlight the life, struggles, relationships, and career of celebrated English singer and songwriter Robbie Williams. The documentary is set to release on Netflix on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 3:01 a.m. EST.

Fans and critics celebrate the musician for his upbeat beats and elegant fashion sense. Despite his reputation as one of the world’s most good-looking men, Williams has always grappled with health issues. In a recent revelation, the songwriter shared his battle with “bigorexia” and surviving on just one banana daily during the disorder’s peak.

Bigorexia, or muscle dysmorphia, drives individuals to obsessively focus on building muscle in their bodies. It exhibits symptoms similar to anorexia nervosa and falls under the category of body dysmorphic disorder.

The ‘Rock DJ’ singer has always been candid about his struggles. He didn’t shy away from talking his heart out about his battle with eating disorders. In an interview with The Sun, when asked about his health condition, Robbie Williams mentioned that he has alternated between eating less and eating more than what was required.

“I had ‘bigorexia’ which is thinking you have no muscles and no size and anorexia. There is a word that’s missing though, and that’s what I am. It was either restrictive or over-eating – I’ve never had it right…there is an eating disorder I’m just not sure which is my brand,” Williams told The Sun.

In 2017, the musician revealed that he experienced a rare sleep disorder that caused him to eat while asleep. Doctors diagnosed Robbie Williams with Nocturnal Sleep-related Eating Disorder (NS-RED) when he started sleep-eating. Researchers believe that Nocturnal Sleep-related Eating Disorder affects about 1.5 percent of the population. It compels people to eat semi-consciously, with no control over their actions.

In 2017, while discussing the rare sleep disorder, the singer asserted that he had gained a lot of weight because of the disorder. He mentioned that he typically preferred eating sweet treats over healthy food. Robbie Williams added, “I am absolutely asleep and I get up, and I go and eat. I don’t do it on purpose – I’m not aware I’m doing it – but it happens. And apparently in my sleep I don’t want kale; I want sugar and loads of it.”
