David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin have discussed making a sequel to 2010’s The Social Network, though Fincher seems at least somewhat hesitant to move forward with the project.
Speaking with The Guardian, Fincher was asked about his next project following the release of 2023’s The Killer. When asked about potentially making a sequel to The Social Network, Fincher said, “Aaron [Sorkin] and I have talked about it, but, um … that’s a can of worms.”
Sorkin has also spoken about making a sequel to The Social Network in the past. He told AP Entertainment in January 2019, “First of all, I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018, but I know enough to know that there should be a sequel. A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss Twins and Eduardo Saverin.”
Directed by Fincher and written by Sorkin, The Social Network was released in United States theaters in October 2010. The movie sees Jesse Eisenberg play Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, while Andrew Garfield plays Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake plays Sean Parker. Armie Hammer, Max Minghella, Brenda Song, and Rashida Jones also star.
The Killer is coming to Netflix in November
Fincher’s latest, The Killer, stars Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, and Tilda Swinton. Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name by Alexis “Matz” Nolan and Lucy Jacamon, the movie is currently playing in select United States theaters before it hits Netflix on November 10, 2023.
“After a fateful near miss, an assassin battles his employers — and himself — on an international hunt for retribution he insists isn’t personal,” the synopsis reads.
When asked if The Killer could turn into a franchise given the rich history of the source material, Fincher said, “One would think. I’ve given up on trying to predict what people want.”
