Mike Flanagan, a filmmaker known for his stellar body of work, will return for a new TV adaptation. Titled The Fall of the House of Usher, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name, premieres on Netflix on October 12, 2023, just in time for the Halloween season.
In addition to revealing the premiere date for the limited series, Netflix also released first-look images of the cast members involved in the upcoming adaptation. Starring Bruce Greenwood as the reclusive Roderick Usher, the eight-episode horror drama will follow Roderick and his twin Madeline as they do anything in their power to make their family business, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, stay and/or ascend to the pinnacle of the industry.
A Gothic Fiction Described as an Unsettling Tale About Tragedy, Greed, and Madness
The Usher family’s dirty linens start to come to the surface when a mysterious woman begins to haunt them. Alongside Greenwood, The Fall of the House of Usher also stars Carla Gugino, Willa Fitzgerald, Mark Hamill, Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, Zach Gilford, and Kate Siegel, among others.
Flanagan has established himself as a leading figure in today’s horror scene. With critically acclaimed horror movie releases like Hush, Oculus, Gerald’s Game, Before I Wake, and Doctor Sleep, the filmmaker also delved into the small screen with successful works that include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. And since Flanagan is no stranger to adapting books into series, The Fall of the House of Usher is shaping up to be an addition to the director’s impressive portfolio.
While it’s too early to assume how the upcoming series will fare, given Flanagan’s experience in the genre, we can expect the upcoming series to be nothing short of terrifying, genre-bending, and subsequently thought-provoking.
