Olmar sees the retainers’ camp and is terrified to see so many of the men wounded and dead. Snake informs Ketil’s family that they have been told to surrender. Ketil’s wife refuses to surrender and blames it on Snake. Since Ketil is unconscious, the decision is left with Olmar as Ketil’s successor.
Olmar chooses to surrender, acknowledging his fear of dying and owning up to his mistakes. He also accepts the fact that he’s not courageous enough to fight.
