An unlikely star stole the show at the Met Gala 2023: a cockroach. As crowds waited for Rihanna to arrive, the critter ran up the steps and earned almost as many camera lenses in its direction as the countless celebrities in attendance. Don’t go creating Twitter fan accounts just yet, however. Here’s what happened to the Met Gala 2023 cockroach.
Did the Met Gala cockroach get stepped on?
Unfortunately, the Met Gala 2023 cockroach was killed after being stepped on during the red carpet walk. Exactly who had inadvertently slaughtered the creature hasn’t been determined.
Never afraid to run with a bit, Twitter users mourned the loss of their latest viral star. They flooded the social media site with memes celebrating the insect’s life. An account was even made called “@metcockroach,” who said they were “invited” to the event.
The theme at this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” chosen by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. It wasn’t without controversy, as some models from The Model Alliance took to the Met Gala steps on Sunday (April 30, 2023) to protest the theme.
The Model Alliance founder Sara Ziff told Jezebel that “the choice to honor Lagerfeld embodies the dissonance of an industry that claims to be progressive … and then reveres figures like [Lagerfeld] without even acknowledging their regressive views.”
Lagerfeld had said in 2018 that he was tired of the MeToo Movement. In comments made to the fashion magazine Numéro, he said that those who don’t want their “pants pulled about” should not become a model. Instead, he suggested they “join a nunnery.” Certainly not as forward-thinking as his fashion.
