Magic Mike’s Last Dance bested a double dose of James Cameron at the domestic box office this slow Super Bowl weekend, earning $8.2 million from 1,500 theaters, enough to take the top spot on the Top 10 chart, per Deadline. That’s the lowest debut (by far) for any film in the Magic Mike franchise. The original earned $39 million in 2012, while Magic Mike XXL hauled in $12.8 million ($27.9 million over the five-day Fourth of July frame) in 2015.
Cameron, meanwhile, came in second and third with Avatar: The Way of Water and his rerelease of Titanic collecting $6.9 million and $6.4 million apiece, respectively. The films are contending with each other for the third spot on the all-time worldwide list where Avatar ($2.213.5 billion) trails Titanic ($2.217 billion) by less than $4 million.
That said, Titanic sold a lot more tickets than The Way of Water. Adjusted to inflation, Avatar has earned about half of Titanic’s total domestic gross — $1.248 billion compared to $646 million, per The Numbers. Still, times have changed and there’s more competition from TV, video games, sports, and cushy home theaters, so it’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, but worth pointing out all the same. (It’s still an incredible box office run for The Way of Water.)
Elsewhere, M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin slipped 61% in Week 2 with $5.5 million to bring its domestic total to $23.4 million, while 80 for Brady landed at No. 4 with $6 million (-53%) and has collected $24.9 million to date. Additionally, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continued its incredible run, adding $5.5 million to its $158.4 million tally and is close to overtaking Sing 2 ($162.7M).
This week sees the anticipated release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, followed by high-profile pics such as Cocaine Bear (Feb. 24), Creed III (March 3), Scream IV (March 10), Shazam! Fury of the Gods (March 17), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (March 24). It’s gonna be a busy spring.
