Castle Rock Entertainment has officially announced the development of the upcoming sequel to Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western crime drama Wind River, titled Wind River: The Next Chapter. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director Kari Skogland has signed on to helm the next installment, which will feature the return of Martin Sensmeier’s Chip Hanson from the 2017 film.

Wind River: The Next Chapter is being written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider). The film hails from Castle Rock Entertainment, Acacia Filmed Entertainment, and Thunder Road Pictures. Production is expected to begin in January.
“In the sequel, terror has escalated on the Wind River reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved,” reads the synopsis (via Deadline). The FBI therefore enlists the aid of Hanson, a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante, and the Reservation he calls home.”
Wind River: The Next Chapter will be executive produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, Derrick Rossi, Jonathan Fuhrman, Courtney Shepard, and Hernan Narea, with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Matthew George serving as producers.

The 2017 film was written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, who won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for his work on the film. It starred Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen and had grossed a modest $45 million against an $11 million budget.
