Following the premiere of Pearl at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has officially confirmed the development of MaXXXine, the third installment in Ti West’s X horror franchise. In addition to West returning to direct, Mia Goth will reprise her role as Maxine, the only survivor of the elderly Pearl’s rampage in the first film.

MaXXXine will be written and directed by Ti West. It is produced by A24, Jacob Jaffke, and West, and executive produced by Goth. Additional producers include Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. The announcement also comes with a teaser that features the film’s title replacing the famous Hollywood sign on top of Griffith Park.
“The film follows Maxine (Goth), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980’s Los Angeles,” reads the synopsis.
West’s previous horror efforts include The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, segments of V/H/S and The ABCs of Death and The Sacrament, as well as episodes of MTV’s Scream, Cinemax’s Outcast, and Fox’s The Exorcist and Wayward Pines.

Before debuting at TIFF, Pearl made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to universal acclaim. The prequel takes places decades before the grisly events of X. Mia Goth returns as the future psycho-biddy Pearl, here a starry-eyed farm girl with a short fuse and a deadly ambition. It is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 16.
