The musical collaboration between Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor with British producer and programmer Atticus Ross has been fairly well-documented, especially after their instrumental album “Ghosts I IV” in 2006, although their frequent work together reached a brand-new audience when they were called upon by David Fincher–who had directed Nine Inch Nail’s video for 2005’s “Only”–to score his 2010 “the story of Facebook” film The Social Network.
Besides being an enormous box office hit and scoring multiple Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), it led to Reznor and Ross collecting Oscar statues on their very first attempt at scoring films. (Note: Reznor did score an earlier film, although that music was never used.) A year, later they provided much of the moody tone for Fincher’s take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, so it only made sense they’d complete what is currently a triptych by doing the score for Fincher’s new adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, which is out this coming Friday.
Last year, while Nine Inch Nails were on hiatus, Ross joined Reznor and his wife Mariqueen Maandig for the side project How to Destroy Angels before Reznor reformed Nine Inch Nails for a new album and tour, which finished this past summer with a summer tour with Soundgarden. Reznor was working on the score for Gone Girl for much of that time while on the road.
This past weekend, ComingSoon.net had a rare chance to sit down with Reznor for a short interview about his collaborations with Fincher, which you can watch below. He also tells us that he doesn’t know what’s next for him although it will not involve any sort of touring.
Gone Girl opens nationwide on Friday, October 3. Look for video interviews with the cast later this week.
