Apple TV+ recently amped up its library of true crime series with a brilliant addition — Black Bird, a haunting drama depicting the true story of Jimmy Keene and serial killer Larry Hall. The limited miniseries is based on Keene’s chilling memoir In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption.
The ongoing series on the streamer picks up the story at the time when Keene was a star footballer in high school but ended up getting tangled in drug dealing and was sentenced to ten years in jail. The FBI offered him a deal to lessen his punishment — use his charming ways to befriend the dangerously unhinged serial killer Larry Hall to make the latter confess to his crimes.
The series spins an engrossing and hair-raising story that narrates the perilous reality of Keene, who had to befriend a man suspected of killing more than 40 women and girls.

“This is a tense true-crime story told with immense confidence and care — but it’s the performances, especially from Paul Walter Hauser and Ray Liotta, that really make Black Bird sing,” writes John Nugent, Empire Magazine.
