Netflix has officially set the launch for the upcoming animated film adaptation of Nimona, based on ND Stevenson‘s bestselling graphic novel of the same name. In addition, the streamer has also released the first-look photo for the adventure film, providing us with our first look at its animation design.
Chloë Grace Moretz (The Addams Family) has signed on to voice the titular role of the shape-shifting teen. Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed and YouTube star Eugene Lee Yang have also been cast for the respective roles of Ballister Boldheart and Ambrosius Goldenlion.

Nimona is being directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. Production began early next year and is expected to make its debut in 2023.
“A Knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill,” reads the synopsis. “Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.”
Executive producers are Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, and Andrew Millstein, with Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, and Julie Zackary. It is a production by Netflix and Annapurna Pictures, with DNEG Animation as its animation studio.

The adaptation was first set up at 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios in 2015. However, due to the Disney acquisition, the project’s release was delayed a number of times until Disney decided to shut down Blue Sky Studios which resulted in the cancellation of the project.
