Encanto Leads Sleepy Post-Thanksgiving Box Office

The domestic box office dipped significantly in the weekend following Thanksgiving, which is a normal occurrence as kids return to school and parents brace for the Christmas season. This week saw Disney’s Encanto top the charts with a $12.7 million (-53%) second weekend and a surprisingly ho-hum $57.9 million total. Per Deadline, the pic’s second weekend marks a lower total than the pre-pandemic second weekends of Disney’s lowest-grossing Turkey Day titles, namely The Good Dinosaur ($15.3 million) and Tangled ($21.6 million). Hope remains that the film will make like The Princess and the Frog and leg it to $100M, though stiff competition in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sing 2 loom large.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife dipped 57% in its third weekend with $10.35 million, bringing its domestic take to $102.2 million. Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci collected $6.77 million (-57%) for $33.6 million; and Resident Evil: Raccoon City fell 50% with $2.65 million and $13.1 million total.
