Matthew Mercer is one of the most versatile voice actors, having voiced many iconic anime and video game characters. However, the role of Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan holds a special place in Mercer’s heart as he was already a fan when he booked the role and the actor finds a lot of interesting elements in the soldier.
“I became a fan of Attack on Titan before I even booked the role,” Matthew Mercer told ComingSoon. “Levi was already my favorite character when I watched part of the first season in Japanese so when I booked it, I was super stoked. It was such a blast. Everyone I worked with was fantastic on it. But getting to really dive into his story, the element so tragedy, the intensity, and moral ambiguity of the character [was so rewarding].

“[Levi Ackerman] is seen as humanity’s strongest and as it happens in a lot of cases of warfare, he’s very much of a ‘whatever it takes’ and ‘the ends justify the means’ type persona. That leads to a lot of very dark decisions and you can really see the edge and trauma that he’s gone through that forms how he comes at his decision making and how he intends to make things right in the world from his perspective. That’s the one that really matters. It’s been an absolute joy to perform this extremely complicated, dark, intense, and still kind of heroic character. That’s the kind of role that every actor can only dream to have the opportunity to have. So I am very thankful.”
Mercer can currently be heard voicing Stryker and Smoke in the animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.
