Universal Pictures is currently in the process of developing an untitled autobiographical movie, centered around the life and career of Grammy winner and Oscar-winning singer-actress Cher (Moonstruck). The project hails from Mamma Mia! producers Judy Craymer and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman.
“Gary and I are thrilled to be working with Cher again and this time bringing her empowering and true-life odyssey to the big screen,” Craymer said in a statement (via Deadline). “One cannot help but be drawn to and inspired by Cher’s larger-than-life talent, fortitude, unique wit, warmth, and vision,” Craymer said. “Her unparalleled success in music film and TV have inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her story to cinema audiences.”
The legendary diva, who is celebrating her 75th birthday today, took to Twitter to confirm the project, revealing that award-winning scribe and dear friend Eric Roth is attached to pen the Cher biopic.

Cher first gained recognition in 1965 as part of the folk-rock duo with then-husband Sonny Bono called Sonny & Cher. The duo’s big break came with their single “I Got You Babe,” which reached the top of the charts and became one of the best-selling hits of the 60s. Following their success, they went on to become television stars with their variety show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour which began Cher’s rise into becoming a fashion icon. Despite its popularity, the show only ran on-air for three seasons from 1971-1974 because it was canceled due to the couple’s divorce.
After their break-up, Cher’s solo singing and acting career have begun to flourish with her singles “Gypsys, Tramps & Things,” and “Half-Breed,” as well as her acclaimed performances in Silkwood, Mask and The Witches of Eastwick, and Moonstruck. The latter had earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. After more than 100 million sold records, hit singles, sold-out concerts, and critically-acclaimed movies later, Cher has cemented her A-list status in the music and film industries and is being considered as one of the greatest artists of all time.
