Fifty Shades of Grey’s Dakota Johnson Joins Depp in Black Mass

It will be nearly a year before fans of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey will get a chance to see Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, but the actress just scored another high-profile role as one of Johnny Depp’s love interests in the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, directed by Scott (Out of the Furnace) Cooper.

Whitey Bulger is a notorious Boston-based convicted murderer involved with the organized crime scene who turned informer (and is known to be the basis for Jack Nicholson’s character in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime film The Departed.)

Johnson, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, plays Lindsey, the mother of Bulger’s 6-year-old son Douglas in the movie that will be distributed by Warner Bros. with Depp in the lead role, Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) playing FBI agent John Connolly, Whitey’s childhood friend who tipped him off when the feds got close, and Guy Pearce as Whitey’s brother Bill, a major power broker in Boston.

Before her turn as Anastasia Steele, Johnson can currently be seen in DreamWorks’ action flick Need for Speed opposite Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper, and previously, she starred in the Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate.”
