Disney Considering Disney+ Debut for Live-Action Films Like Cruella

Following the official confirmation for Wonder Woman 1984’s simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max releases, fans have been wondering if Disney would also follow suit with Warner Bros.’ decision by potentially releasing Marvel Studios’ Black Widow to Disney+. However, it looks like that’s not the case for the Scarlett Johansson-led superhero film, with Deadline bringing word that Disney is instead considering a Disney+ release for their forthcoming live-action family films such as Emma Stone’s Cruella, Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio, and David Lowery’s Peter Pan and Wendy.

The outlet notes that it’s still unclear if these potential streaming releases would be offered with a premium charge on Disney+ or not. However, the possibility that the House of Mouse could choose this route is very likely as Disney CEO Bob Chapek previously confirmed that due to Mulan’s positive premiere access performance, they’re looking to utilize it for future offerings. As for Black Widow, Disney is still reportedly committed into bringing the long-delayed MCU film into theaters and has currently no talks of a streaming debut option.

Cruella will explore the villainess who originated in Dodie Smith’s 1956 book, “The Hundred and One Dalmatians.” The role was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in Disney’s 1961 animated adaptation and played by Glenn Close in the 1996 live-action take (as well as in that film’s 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians).

The film will be starring Academy Award-winning actresses Emma Thompson (Howards End), and Emma Stone (La La Land), who is set to portray the titular fur-obsessed antagonist. The upcoming prequel is expected to be set in the 1970s, with Stone calling her take on the character “punk rock.”

Starring Tom Hanks as Geppotto, the live-action Pinocchio will center on the wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a “real boy,” and the relationship between a father and son, the ramifications of lying and creating stories and living in a fantasy world. The original animated film, based on the 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, first debuted in theaters in 1940 and won two Academy Awards.

The film will feature the reunion of long-time collaborators Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, who have working together on acclaimed films such as Forrest Gump and Cast Away.

First published in 1911, Peter Pan & Wendy tells the story of the boy who never grows up named Peter Pan as he meets Wendy Darling and takes her along with her brothers John and Michael to the magical island of Neverland. There, they get to meet the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell, followed by many dangerous adventures against Peter’s lifelong nemesis Captain Hook.

The live-action film will star newcomers Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson in titular roles along with Jude Law as Captain Hook and Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell. It will be directed by David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon, The Green Knight) with Toby Halbrooks having co-written the adaptation with Lowery.
