In the previous episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Christina provided money to Leti for access to the Winthrop house, which was dangerously haunted. In Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 4, Tic, Leti, and Montrose search for Titus’ vault in Boston.
The Orrery
Christina visited Leti at the Winthrop house and revealed that the money to buy it came from her. She told Leti that she was looking for the orrery, a mechanical model of the solar system. Leti told her to leave as the deed was in her name no matter where the money came from. Without Leti’s knowledge, Hippolyta had taken the orrery. She explained to a patron of George’s shop that it didn’t work, and she couldn’t figure out how to get to the gears.
Later, we saw Christina visit the policeman who had questioned Leti in the paddy wagon. He had affiliation with the local Sons of Adam Lodge. However, Christina challenged his membership of the Order. She taunted him for allowing Leti to own Winthrop house.
Titus’ Vault
Leti and Tic confronted Montrose about his knowledge of the Sons of Adam. After explaining George gave him the bylaws, Tic, Leti, and Montrose headed to a museum in Boston where they believed Titus’ vault was located. However, they needed Hippolyta’s car, so they brought her and Dee, and Tree tagged along. They determined the entrance to the vault was in the Titus Braithwaite wing. They broke in later to enter the vault.
It was a perilous journey through the vault, with disappearing planks, rising water, and doors requiring Tic’s blood. They discovered a skeleton which transformed into an intersex Arawak woman named Yahima. Tic could understand her, and he explained that Titus had used her and killed her people. He imprisoned her in the vault. She refused to help Tic. When Tic grabbed the Titus’ pages of the Book of Names, the windows broke, and water flooded in. They, including Yahima, escaped via an elevator, the same one in Leti’s house. When Yahima tried to speak, she screamed. Titus had turned her into a siren if she left. Yahima got settled in Leti’s house, but when Montrose was alone with her, he slit her throat.
Hera’s Chariot
At the museum, Hippolyta took Dee to the planetarium. She explained that, as a girl, she had named a comet Hera’s Chariot as part of contest. However, the naming credit was given to a white little girl instead. As she and Dee drove back home, Hippolyta was suspicious of how the others made it back before them. Dee was drawing on the Atlas, catching Hippolyta’s attention. She saw Devon County circled on it. Hippolyta turned the car around to get some answers.
Hot Date
Ruby learned that the department store she wanted to work in had recently hired a black woman for the first time. She sang at a bar but was in poor spirits. William, the only white man in the bar, paid her tab and invited her to spill her troubles. She explained her situation. Though she rebuffed him, they ended up heading to Winthrop house and sleeping together.
