On February 12, director Jose Padilha’s new vision of RoboCop opens in regular theaters and IMAX, boasting an ensemble cast that includes Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Set in the year 2028, RoboCop is both an action blockbuster and, effectively, a superhero origin story that still manages to maintain the satirical wit of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original. Setting the focus a bit more on Oldman’s Dr. Dennett Norton as a Dr. Frankenstein figure, the film raises some serious questions about our own humanity and the role it plays in modern warfare.
We sat down to speak with Oldman, Kinnaman (who plays officer Alex Murphy before and after he becomes the title hero) and Cornish (who plays Clara Murphy, Alex’s loving wife) to discuss their new approach to the modern classic.
