The newly-merged actors guild SAG-AFTRA gave out their 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this evening on a live broadcast on TBS, making it even clearer who might be winning on Oscar night with some of the same winners from this past week’s Golden Globes and Critics Choice Movie Awards being honored by their fellow actors.
That is, with one major exception which was David O. Russell’s American Hustle (Sony), which won the big award of the night, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast, over the heavily favored 12 Years a Slave.
There are only four other SAG awards for film and while 12 Years a Slave missed out on Ensemble Cast, Lupita Nyong’O received her second honor of the week for her supporting role in the film. Dallas Buyers Club was the top winner by receiving two awards, one for each of its male actors, Matthew McConaughey (in Lead) and Jared Leto (in Supporting), with Cate Blanchett winning for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
“Breaking Bad” won for the Best Ensemble Cast for a Drama Series with Bryan Cranston getting the Actor for his leading role on the show. “Modern Family” took Best Ensemble Cast for a Comedy Series with Ty Burrell receiving the Actor for his role on the show. Julia Louis-Dreyfus received an Actor for her performance on the HBO comedy “Veep,” while Maggie Smith received the corresponding award for the PBS Drama “Downtown Abbey.”
