Matt Damon could wind up being Bourne again. Twitch is reporting that Universal Pictures is negotiating with both the Elysium star and with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass to return to the action franchise. A Jason Bourne-centric film would, the site claims, be developed in tandem with the recently announced fifth franchise entry, said to continue the adventures of Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross from last year’s The Bourne Legacy.
“We’re gonna follow Jeremy’s character,” producer Marshall said shortly before Legacy‘s release. “Everything else is wide open. That’s the great thing about this now. The table is set to go any direction we want to. But we will, I’m sure, follow Jeremy and see what happens.”
“As far as the future,” added Renner, “I’m excited that the architects and the creators behind this whole thing have cleverly left it wide open for fans like myself to wonder what’s going to go on next.”
Although Damon has, in the past, expressed some interest in reprising the role, he’s made it very clear that he will not do so without the participation of Greengrass. Following the release of Ultimatum, Greengrass and Damon re-teamed for Green Zone. Greengrass’ next, Captain Phillips, stars Tom Hanks and is set for release on October 11.
If Damon does decide to return to the franchise, a crossover between Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross could be in the works at some point down the line.
