Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton Netflix Series Lands Julie Andrews

Based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling series of novels, spanning from 2000 to 2013, this smart feminist take on Regency England romance unveils the glittering, wealthy, sexual, painful, funny, and sometimes lonely lives of the women and men in London’s high society marriage mart as told through the eyes of the powerful Bridgerton family.

The series is set in the world of Regency London high society, unveiling a seductive and sumptuous world composed of intricate rules and dramatic power struggles, in which no one is ever on steady ground. At the center of it all is the funny, witting and clever Bridgerton family, comprised of eight siblings who must navigate the upper ten-thousands’ marriage mart in search of romance, adventure, and love.

Andrews, who won an Oscar for her debut performance in 1964’s Mary Poppins, is also known for her roles in 1965’s The Sound of Music, 1982’s Victor/Victoria, 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel and voice-over roles in the latter three Shrek films, Despicable Me and its 2017 threequel and last year’s comic box office hit Aquaman.

The legendary actress is set to star as Lady Whistledown, who is described as an anonymous, sharp-tongued gossip writer “who uses a curious mix of social commentary and scathing insult to send the season of 1813’s ton into an all-out frenzy.”

The series, which earned an eight-episode order and is set to debut in 2020, is being adapted by Scandal veteran Chris Van Dusen, who will also showrun the project and executive produce alongside Rhimes and Betsy Beers of Shondaland.

Rhimes signed a deal with Netflix last year in which she would develop projects exclusively for the streaming service, with eight series currently in development, including the Bridgerton series.
