The film, written and directed by Lauren Schacher (The Canyons) in her directorial debut, will follow a high school valedictorian who with the help of her two best friends tries to enlist the school’s new chemistry teacher to lead an after-school sex-ed class.
In addition to Salazar, the film will be produced by Bronwyn Cornelius, who recently was attached to the Alfre Woodard-led drama Clemency, and Stefan Nowicki, who previously produced the Jenny Slate indie dramedy hit Obvious Child and the over 40-year-developed Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace.
Schacher, who has acting credits in films including Paul Schrader’s 2013 erotic thriller The Canyons and the HBO biopic drama Phil Spector, most recently wrapped production on the dramedy Bailey & Darla led by Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Sam Richardson (Veep) and Jordana Brewster (Furious 7), on which Schacher co-wrote and executive produced the film.

Salazar first found success with the acclaimed indie romantic drama Night Owls alongside Adam Pally (Happy Endings) before landing a key role in the box office hit franchise Maze Runner, starring in the second and third films of the trilogy before starring in the Netflix hits The Kindergarten Teacher and Bird Box and getting the titular role in the big-screen adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel from James Cameron (Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City).
Production on The Bang Bang Girls is set to begin sometime this fall with Paradigm currently auctioning the rights to the project at Cannes.
